Dark Discoveries open for Submissions again

•October 11, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Dark Discoveries magazine has now opened for submissions. I’ve revamped the guidelines and raised the pay a bit more. There’s a couple of big changes in that I’m not taking simultaneous submissions anymore and we’re getting tougher on proper formatting, etc. I will still be open to reprints, but will mostly be running classic reprints from older authors. If we meet our mark for the subscription drive by the end of the year, then I’ll bump it up to pro rates ($.05 a word). Currently we’re almost halfway there. See the INFO page for guidelines.

Submission Update and Subscription Drive

•August 31, 2009 • 2 Comments

With issue #14 hitting around the time my wife had a baby I’m a little behind, but wanted to post a quick update on submissions for Dark Discoveries magazine. Please hold off on sending your submissions for just a short bit longer as I am working with my web person, Sunni Brock, on incorporating a submission section into my web server with a dedicated email, an automated receipt response, tracking system, etc. It will be done very soon, and  then we will be officially re-opening for submissions with an increased pay rate, new guidelines, etc.

I’m launching a subscription drive now as well. I’m going to have to raise the cover price finally starting January 2010, so I want to give people a chance to take advantage of the lower price now before it goes up. My goal is also to be paying professional pay rates ($.05 a word) by the end of this year. I need 75 subscriptions (renewals will count too) to get there.

Thanks to the help of my new staff (headed up by my managing editor Jason V Brock – www.jasunni.com) we’re on a solid quarterly schedule for Dark Discoveries – having produced 3 issues since December, 2008 – with the fourth (#15) due in October. My commitment to you is we will continue that in the future. Here’s a taste of what we have slated for you in upcoming issues:

Issue #15: Lovecraft Special – Featuring H.P. Lovecraft, Brian Lumley, H.R. Giger, Dan O’Bannon, S.T. Joshi, Wilum Pugmire, Cody Goodfellow, Allen Koszowski, David A. Riley and more.

Issue #16: Horror Comics/Pulps Special – William F. Nolan, Frank M. Robinson, Hugh B. Cave, EC Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Weston Ochse, Paul Bens Jr., and more.

Issue #17: Dark SciFi Special – Dennis Etchison, Joe Lansdale, John Shirley, Philip Jose Farmer, Harlan Ellison, Philip K. Dick and more.

Current subscribers wishing to renew their subscription, to find out where you stand, or for any other queries, please drop me a line at: darkdiscoveries@msn.com

All contributor, store & direct order copies of DD #13 shipped now!

•May 10, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Just wanted to pop in for a quick update. The last batch went out today of the new issue of DARK DISCOVERIES. This includes Contributor, subscriber copies, and any direct or confirmed store orders. Expect to see yours within the next week or two (usually more time for overseas and Canada though). This is my quickest turnaround ever (1 week!!!) and I owe a lot of it to being much more organized (and I owe my co-editor Jason Brock a big thanks for his help in that direction). We’re already hard at work on issue #14 and are looking great for having it out in July. Issue #15 is slated for an October 1st release and Issue #16 for January, 2010.

My goals this year was to take DD to the next level. This meant going to color, making the magazine look more professional and also paying more professional rates. It also meant getting it on a solid quarterly basis to help ensure timely material and advertising. So far we have made a huge step in that direction. It’s full speed ahead!

The last thing is that I just heard from my rep at Ingram yesterday that she already got the copies I sent on Monday and pitched Disticor (Canada Distributor) and Barnes and Noble about the new color and look of DD. They both loved it and 325 more copies are headed north of the border and over 700 more for B & N starting with issue #14. This includes almost 300 more stores for DD. It’s been a great week!

PS: If anybody has gotten their copies of DD #13 yet, please feel free to drop me a line about it. I’d love to hear what you think of it!

DARK DISCOVERIES #13 Is Done and shipping!

•May 3, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Dark Discoveries #13 is done and I have it in my hands now. Our first issue with Full-Color covers (and some color interior pages) and our all-new layouts. This one is a Forrest J. Ackerman special and features a brand new interview with Ray Bradbury, Ackerman Tributes, an article on the Ackermuseum, and Ackerman meets Farmer. There’s also brand new fiction and interviews with Steve Rasnic Tem and Christopher Conlon, fiction by Don D’Ammassa and Bruce Golden, a new American Gauthic column, and more!

It’s up for order on my website now: http://darkdiscoveries.1freecart.com/i/92558/dark-discoveries-spring-2009.htm and will be available at the usual stores like Horrormall, Overlook Connection, Borderlands Books, Dark Delicacies, Powell’s Books, Dreamhaven, etc.

I almost forgot! We’re trying something new that’s kinda neat. We’re posting a few sample pages up at a site called issuu.com that you can look at, print out, etc. It’s a nice way to sample a few pages to see what some of our new layouts, etc. look like before you buy a copy. It’s just a taste (we’ve got many more layouts, photos, etc. in the actual magazine), but will give you an idea what you’re in store for. Here’s the link:
